Things To Do

Escape to the breathtaking Somerset countryside when you stay at West Hollowcombe Farm, with leafy trees and verdant landscapes at every turn. Located in the stunning Exmoor National Park, you can be absorbed in some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK whilst still being within a short distance of local towns and attractions.

For all those keen walkers out there, you will be pleased to know that the properties are situated in 60 acres of fields, river and woodland. The area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest with an abundance of flora and fauna to discover as well as magical ancient woodland and valley views. There is even an adventure playground for little ones to stop and play in along the way, making this location a fantastic place to get out and explore.

Exmoor National Park is also a designated Dark Sky Reserve making it a spectacular place to star gaze and learn your constellations. So even as night falls you can still take in the breathtaking surroundings and revel in the simplicity of nature.

The National Park offers a variety of local walks suitable for all levels of ability, from beginners to avid hikers, including those walking with children. One of the most popular routes is The Tarr Steps near Dulverton. The seven-mile circular walk starts at the steps, an ancient clapper bridge renowned as one of Exmoor's historical gems. Legend has it that the slabs were placed there by the devil to win a bet with a local giant!

The historical legend continues with a visit to Dunster Castle which is just half an hour away from the properties. Dating back over 1,000 years, this ancient castle and watermill has existed since Norman times possessing a turbulent history. Now owned by the National Trust, visitors can explore the castle and its impressive gardens which display an array of subtropical plants.

For those seeking a more fast-paced experience, a trip to Wimbleball Lake offers a fantastic day out for the whole family, with an array of watersports to be enjoyed in incredible surroundings. Paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing are just some of the activities available, or you can choose to unwind in the Coffee Couture café with a warm toastie or a scrumptious slice of cake while others work up a sweat.

Alternatively, you can hop in the car and take drive to the stunning Devon coastline. Saunton Sands Beach is a favorite among visitors, boasting an idyllic three-mile stretch of golden sand. This beach welcomes dogs throughout the year and offers superb amenities, such as a beach shop and a grill by the beachside. It's enjoyed by surfers for its gentle, rolling waves, and the numerous rock pools provide endless exploration for children.

For those who favour family activities on dry land, The Exmoor Pony Centre is a worthwhile destination. It not only offers a delightful experience but also supports a charitable organisation dedicated to preserving the endangered Exmoor Pony. Visitors can book riding sessions, meet the ponies in the paddocks, shop in the pony themed gift shop and enjoy a picnic and maybe even a slice of homemade cake from the centre's staff if you’re lucky.

Animal enthusiasts will be further delighted with an extraordinary experience at Exmoor Zoo, home of the Exmoor Beast, located just 45 minutes away from the properties. Guests can mingle with meerkats, monkeys, and even have the opportunity to be a zookeeper for a day or take a VIP guided tour of the zoo.

For a more leisurely day wandering through local towns, exploring independent shops, dining at delightful eateries, and enjoying the local scenery, Dulverton is just a 15-minute drive away. You can start your day with a coffee and a delicious pastry at The Exclusive Cake Company Bakery or a freshly bake scone from The Original Dulverton Deli as you meander around the town. Treat yourself to a spot of cream tea or a light lunch at The Copper Kettle, a very quaint and quintessentially British setting boasting beautiful gardens to the rear.

Only 20 minutes from the properties lies Tarr Farm Inn, a traditional stone building nestled in a picturesque river and woodland setting, dating back to the 1600s. Situated on the renowned Tarr Steps, the Inn offers award-winning cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients – perfect for a peaceful evening dining experience.

The Mason Arms in Knowestone is another award-winning establishment, offering a picture-perfect setting in a thatched 13th-century inn on the edge of Exmoor. This inn is proud to hold a Michelin Star, celebrating its outstanding local cuisine. Visitors can indulge in a real ale or a glass of fine champagne to enhance their dining experience.
