The Tarr Steps

Cross an Ancient Clapper Bridge

The Tarr Steps are a magnificent and ancient landmark, definitely worth visiting in Exmoor National Park. Known as a "clapper bridge," it is the oldest and longest structure of its kind in Great Britain, with origins that could date back hundreds or even thousands of years.

There is also plenty to do around the Tarr Steps to make a day of it. If you're in the mood for a paddle or a swim, enjoy the shallow waters near the steps, or take a 20-minute walk upstream to find deeper waters perfect for wild swimming. Consider visiting the nearby Withypool Hill stone barrow, an ancient relic dating back thousands of years.
