About the Area

As the hustle and bustle of the busy city fades into the distance, you are gradually greeted by the green fields, lush valleys, craggy hillsides and characterful dry stone walls; a verdant landscape easing you into the peace and tranquillity of nature. There are few places in the UK more beautiful and breath-taking than the Yorkshire Dales National Park. With it’s classic novel-inspiring scenery, quaint villages and famous landmarks, there is much to see and do in this part of the country.

Long Ashes Park is the perfect starting point with leisure facilities, play areas and a cosy, traditional Inn all available on site for guests to access during their stay. The Leisure Club offers complimentary use of the 15m indoor, heated pool, steam room, sauna, hot tub, poolside relaxation area and gym for all guests staying overnight.  It’s the perfect way to completely unwind during your countryside escape. Just a short stroll from the glamping pods, The Gamekeeper’s Inn is an idyllic spot to settle by the fire and enjoy a delicious, home-cooked bite to eat.

There is even a Spa located on site where guests can book in for relaxing treatments from manicures to facials with trained specialists who are there to meet your every need. You can also choose to pair it with a meal or afternoon tea for the full luxury experience.

To keep the little ones entertained, there is an outdoor play area complete with slides and climbing frames which parents can view with ease as they enjoy a coffee at the neighbouring Inn.

If you’re looking to venture a little further afield you are spoilt for choice in the surrounding areas, whether you’re looking for a day of non-stop activity or something a little more serene.

The best way to see the local villages and landscapes are to pull on your walking boots and head out on foot. There are many walking and cycling routes to try which will ensure you see all the most scenic spots. Grass Wood Nature Reserve is a short distance from Grassington and is one of the largest areas of broadleaved woodland in the Dales with an array of flora and fauna to behold. Freeholders’ Wood will take you past Aysgarth Falls which is an idyllic place to stop for a picnic and take in the sights. There are plenty of walking trails in and around the Grassington area which promise a front seat view to the best of the Dales.

If you’re up for a real challenge, the Dales is also home to the Yorkshire Three Peaks which will test your tenacity but reward you with spectacular scenery along your journey.

The Yorkshire Dales is also a wealth of riches when it comes to history and culture, boasting an abundance of museums, castles and historic villages scattered all around. The Museum of North Craven Life in Settle showcases the history of the local area. Just on the doorstep in Grassington there is the Grassington Folk Museum where you can learn of local folklore, period costumes, local trade and World War II memorabilia.

Middleham Castle, which was once home to Richard III, is also certainly worth a visit. The extensive remains of this grand fortified palace boast magnificent views of Wensleydale and beyond. Bolton Abbey sits 25 minutes south of Long Ashes where you can see the ruins of this Augustinian Priory in its stunning riverside setting along with the aqueduct, Barden Tower and the famous stepping stones which provide a fun challenge for those willing to try the crossing. Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle, is one of the best preserved medieval castles in England and is just a short drive away from the park. Visitors can enjoy the splendour and old tales from this fascinating piece of English history. Lots of these historic monuments host family days and seasonal events throughout the year such as falconry experiences, tea rooms and colourful light trails.

For something a little more adrenaline-inducing, a day trip to Lightwater Valley is certain to keep the kids entertained for hours with over 40 rides and attractions plus daily entertainment. There is also The Forbidden Corner which is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created within a four acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

When you’re ready to take a well-earned rest and enjoy a bite to eat and maybe a glass of your favourite tipple there are plenty of eateries to choose from, both on the doorstep and further afield.

The Morral at The Black Horse is just a short five minute drive from the park and offers a relaxed dining experience with fresh local produce and a wide selection of craft ales and lagers, with wine sourced from sustainable vineyards.

Also a short drive away is The Fountaine Inn in Linton which provides hearty Yorkshire pub classics and is a firm favourite with ramblers and cyclists passing through this scenic area.

When ambling through neighbouring villages, be sure to stop at The Tan Hill Inn which is Britain’s highest public house at 528m above sea level. Grab a burger or a famous Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding in this unique and lively venue which has played hosts to bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and The Levellers.

So, whether you plan to be out and about exploring the sights, or you prefer a slower relaxing pace, either way we are confident you will enjoy a memorable break at Long Ashes.
