With a rich heritage that can be traced back to 300BC, the Cathedral City of Lincoln is a history lovers dream. You can walk in the footsteps of kings and queens, discover roman ruins, learn of epic battles and explore the breathtaking architecture on every corner. Boasting award-winning attractions an array of independent shops and eateries it is easy to create the perfect getaway, whether it's a romantic escape, a friendly get together or a family adventure. 

Located in the semi-urban suburb of Bracebridge, The Gingerbread House has excellent road connections into the centre of Lincoln and takes a mere 12 minutes to get to the heart of the action. As you approach the city centre you are greeted by the spectacle of Lincoln Cathedral which truly is the gem of the city. The grandeur of this 11th century gothic church is nothing short of awe-inspiring with its impressive arched ceilings and stunning stained glass windows. Lincoln Cathedral has been a centrepiece of English history for almost 1000 years surviving wars, natural disasters and significant religious changes. It is definitely not to be missed!

Delve even further into the world of history and art at Lincoln Museum which takes you on a fascinating journey from the Stone Age through to the Medieval era of the city. The adjoining Usher Gallery boasts a wide collection from esteemed artists such as Turner, Lowry and Grayson Perry, exhibiting the wealth of culture that spans across Lincoln. 

Immerse yourself in the opulent Elizabethan history of Doddington Hall & Gardens which is just a short drive to the west of the property. Completed in 1600 by Robert Smythson this exceptional mansion offers an insight into the decadence of the era with displays of extravagant furnishings, paintings, weaponry and much more. Take a stroll around the beautiful gardens which exhibit an array of flora which was designed with the assistance of experts from Kew Gardens. The meandering paths are filled with colours and scents which are particularly impressive in the spring and summer months. 

Lincoln Guildhall and Stonebow have been the meeting place of the City Council since Medieval times and is still in use today, however, it also houses a treasure trove of artefacts and regalia, including a sword belonging to Richard II. Stonebow, the limestone archway beneath the Guildhall, was the southern entrance to the city in 211AD. Part of the original Roman gateway exists underneath the Stonebow today and offers an exciting find as you meander around.

Whilst Lincoln does boast a proud heritage, you will soon come to realise that it offers so much more than tales of the past. You can also find a large selection of boutique shops and eateries to keep you busy as you wander around the city. The beautiful Steep Hill and Bailgate is home to some of Lincoln’s best independent stores from clothing to homemade jewellery, while the Cathedral Quarter hosts monthly markets showcasing the finest local produce. For more high-end shopping, the Cornhill Quarter is home to many designer brands and luxury boutiques where you can really load up the car with plenty of treats a mementos from your stay. 

If you're enjoying a family getaway and you're looking for things to keep the little ones entertained, particularly on a rainy day, there is no shortage of kid’s events and activities around the city.  Lincoln’s Mystery Treasure Trail is a fantastic, self-guided tour around the city, all you need to do is download the trail from the Treasure Trails Website for a small fee. Children will be entertained for hours as they solve clues to discover 'whodunit?' or find the missing treasure. It is also an imaginative way for adults to explore more of the sights and sounds of Lincoln. 

The Little Pottery Studio is just a five-minute drive from The Gingerbread House, where young children can partake in ‘paint your own pottery’ classes, captivating their imagination and bringing out their creative side.  If they need to burn a little more energy, Jump Inc is also just a few minutes away from the property and promises to be ‘the best trampolining, ninja and inflatable park on the planet!’. There is no better way to keep young ones entertained on a rainy afternoon, they even offer toddler sessions for your tiny tots. 

Approximately 15 minutes away is The Natural World Centre which sits at the heart of the stunning Whisby Nature Park. The Park consists of 150 acres of natural habitat and features waymarked trail where visitors can spot an array of beautiful birds from wagtails to goldcrests and many more. Otter’s Reach Indoor Adventure also offers younger visitors to explore the reserve with 'Spider Web' climbing frames and imaginative play or 'Little Darter’s Outdoor Play Area' is packed full of exciting tunnels, bridges and sandpits. 

With so much to see and do, the whole family will be in need of some well-earned refreshments by the end of the day and there are plenty of options to choose from for a hearty lunch, a delicious evening meal or maybe an indulgent afternoon tea. 

Located on Lincoln’s famous Steep Hill, Bunty’s Tea Room is a family run, vintage tearoom with classic China cups, homemade cakes, lunches and their extra special Afternoon Tea. The perfect place to stop for a treat in between sightseeing and located on one of the prettiest, most quaint streets in the city. 

To quench your thirst, you can make a pitstop at the Magna Carta Pub which is probably the best positioned pub in Lincoln, offering views of both the Castle and the Cathedral. Providing a range of traditional dishes and a selection of ales and wines, this charming pub is, of course, named after the historic Magna Carta document which can be found in the neighbouring Lincoln Castle. The Castle is now the only place in the world where an original 1215 Magna Carta and 1217 Charter of the Forest can be seen side by side. 

For a spot of fine dining The Old Bakery is just a short stroll from Lincoln Castle and this restored Victorian bakery offers guests an inventive menu using the freshest local ingredients. It has even been nominated in the Times ‘Foodie’ section, so it is certainly worth a visit. The Bronze Pig is just a few doors down from the Old Bakery and also treats guests to a memorable fine dining experience. Choose from a Venetian Afternoon tea or The America 5 Course Tasting Menu as you soak up the quirky, vibrant atmosphere.
